Matt also loved to make pottery. He enjoyed hiking and together with Linda hiked trails to see beautiful waterfalls. Though slowing down he continued to walk until the end. Favorites were Childs park and Dingmans falls, and Grey towers.

I think I fell in love with Matt because he could always make me laugh. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved his family. Matt couldn’t spend enough time with his children and couldn’t wait to get home from work to be with them.
I was looking through his things and found he had kept a letter I wrote to him all these years that sums up how I felt about him. This is the letter.
June 30, 1987
Dear Matt,
Today is our Anniversary - 14 years. Jessie asked me if we had been married a long time. When I told her 14 years, she said “That’s not so long. I can count to 14”. When I hear it, it seems a long time. But living it, it feels like a moment in time. It seems like yesterday that you asked me if I wanted a piece of gum and we talked over coffee at a cafe.
Remember how we both said we were not interested in getting married? A few weeks later we were engaged. So far away it seems like a dream and so close I can almost touch the face of that young man. And when I look into your eyes I still see that young man. With luck and the grace of God I hope I always will.
We’ve been through so very much these past 15 years, good times and bad. But we’ve emerged stronger and I feel more in love than when we met. Remember our passion and the wonderful electricity just holding hands generated? Sometimes it’s hard to find the time and energy for it now but I know in my heart that with a good nights sleep and some older kids who sleep through the night it will re-emerge. And remember the wonder of Jessie’s birth and the triumph of Russell’s. We’ve grown so much together. And we’ve been so fortunate to have grown in the same direction.
Here’s looking to the future, a future filled with the love we have for each other and for our children. Happy Anniversary darling.
Linda

A gentle soul, now at rest,
His love, a beacon, forever blessed.
In every heart, his memory lives on,
A guiding light, though he is gone.
"Though he's gone from sight, his love remains, a guiding star through life's terrains. A father-in-law, a heart so true, forever cherished, we'll miss you."

Last year I got my Dad a shirt that said " I don't know how to act my age, I've never been this old before."
He was forever a 20 something trapped in a 78 year old's body. I loved that so much about him.

Matt was the best father in law I could have asked for. Once he saw me mowing the lawn and trimming trees he accepted me right in as part of the family. I will forever miss his slaps on the back, hugs and mischievous smile. I'll miss our back porch chats while listening to music that Linda always told him to not play so loud. He'd turn it down til she went inside and then he'd turn it back up and give that mischievous smile.
When I got my CDL and started driving trucks he was so happy and proud. He insisted that I needed a "trucker handle" for the CB and dubbed me Lil B. That's what he called me from then on.
He was so proud when Jess and I bought our house that he gave us most of his tools and then borrowed them back over the years .......I'm taking them back again and will think of you every time I use them. I could go on and on with funny memories but it's Matt, anyone that knew him has similar memories. So all I can say is Lil B loves you and will always miss you and that mischievous smile.

My oldest memory of my Dad was when I was very little, sitting on the floor of our living room, watching with a sense of quiet awe and fascination as he sat on our old plaid couch, strumming his acoustic guitar and singing Allman Brothers songs to me.
I remember driving in his red pickup truck, and later in his big blue bronco, always music on the radio, his voice strong, and maybe a bit off key, when he'd sing along to the Rolling Stones.
I remember taking apart old computers with him and learning about RAM and CPU's and motherboards. And I remember thinking then that he was the smartest man I knew.
And I remember always laughing when we were together, at family dinners and cookouts, on our weekly morning phone calls. I will miss the sound of his laugh the most I think.
I'll never forget the way he looked at me when he walked me down at the isle on my wedding day. And that same look, again, when I got my first house and he came in the door and looked around and told me how proud he was of me.
There are so many more memories that come in waves of him. I think Pink Floyd said it best, "How I wish, how I wish you were here."
