Not goodbye but until we meet again. I always remembered when we talk you wanted to hear what projects I was working on and all about the kids. I told them all about you and how you always asked about them. The world lost a great man.

Tom,
I’m so glad we had this time together.
Just to have a laugh or sing a song.
Seems we just got started and before you know it,
Comes the time we have to say
“So long”
Till we meet again.
Love,
“I”

Uncle Tom….There are so many things to say about Uncle Tom. The one word that I have come to realize embodies him is MONUMENT. As I was writing this, I couldn’t help but look up the formal definition of monument, and found that it truly fits him perfectly.
Monument - an outstanding, enduring, and memorable example of something.
Uncle Tom was a man among men. He has and will always be revered as what a man should be, intelligent, rugged, and loving. He walked the walk and never bragged, but he always imparted lessons along the way.
He loved Aunt Eileen, Bobby, Danny, TJ, and Chris deeply. It was evident in the way he would talk to them, the smiles and jokes that seemed to regularly fill the room whenever he was in it.
Uncle Tom was always caring and loving. He was never shy about showing it. Yet the man was strong as an ox, showing me up a time or two in his basement gym.
Growing up, I had a very close bond with Uncle Tom, and he blessed me with my nickname that stuck “Dr.Doom”. I love that nickname and displayed it with pride when I got it as my motorcycle license plate back in 2014 and still have it to this day. I remember when I told him about the plate, he got a kick out of it and thought it was cool, but told me to be careful on the bike.
I am going to miss sitting with him and just having conversations for hours. Listening about the life he lived, things he did, lessons he learned and so much more. I will miss hearing him say “Hiya Pal”, “There’s my Dr.Doom” and “I love ya Pal” when we’d say bye. I am going to miss seeing how excited he was when he was around my kids.
One of my favorite childhood memories was the Summer vacation to Monticello with Aunt Eileen, Uncle Tom, and the boys. The smell of fresh cut grass always brings me back to that Summer. It will now also bring me to think of Uncle Tom and how much I miss him.
I will always look up to Uncle Tom as the monument he is. A lasting example of what a man should be, a pillar of his family and a great friend.
Uncle Tom, I look forward to seeing you again and sitting for more of our conversations at the kitchen table. Until then I’ll miss you!
Love,
Eric/Dr.Doom

For the 18 years that I have been around Papa has always been there. I am grateful for all the time I got to spend with him and only wish I had another minute to thank him for the memories. Papa could write a book about anything, once you got the man talking he could go on for hours, he had a great memory. I’m glad I have the honor of being his grandson and I will never forget the things you taught Brendan, Aidan, and I.
“Bend your knees!”
It’s difficult to put into words how much you meant to our family. I’ll see you on the dark side of the moon Papa (but don’t tell Mom, I wasn’t supposed to go.) I love you forever and thank you for everything.

Most men are only given one father in life. I was blessed with two. When Dad came into our lives in 1988, he made it clear to Bob and I that he was not trying to replace our father, but that he would ALWAYS be there if we needed him. He made true on his promise. He never made any attempt to be our father, but he was ALWAYS our Dad.
I came to truly love the man and made room for him in my heart as a second father. We became close friends and I will always cherish my time with him.
When I became a father myself, Dad became a proud Grandfather. He shared the unconditional love with my children just as he did with me. Papa was never seen as anything but a great man in our family. This was cemented for me as I watched my children, tears in all our eyes, say goodbye to the greatest man they ever knew.
Dad will be remembered in every movie quote, song, and loving moment I share with my children. I can’t imagine where I’d be without his guidance and I don’t know how to imagine life without him.
Never have so many tears been shed for a man who was brave enough to take on life for 94 years. I thank God for every minute I spent with him and only wish I had a few more to tell him how much I love him.
Thank you, Dad.
“I’ll give him 15 more minutes.”
I never will forget him
For he made me what I am.
Though he may be gone,
His memory lingers on.
And I miss him, my old man.

A MIRACULOUS LIFE
February 25th 2023 marked the passing of my brother-in-law, my partner, my friend Tom Cavanaugh. He was 94.
That number rolled around in my head. 94….94.
I started to think about all the amazing, incredible, things his eyes had seen during those 94 years.
At the time of his birth in 1928 there was no internet, no world wide web, no FaceTime, no Facebook, no Twitter, no tweets. Who needed them. There were no computers.
Born just prior to the Great Depression and only a handful of years before a Second World War, his young eyes were witness to so many incredible events.
To think that just 25 years before his birth, the Wright Brothers took to the skies and a mere two years after his birth the jet engine was invented.
These and so many other marvels of science, engineering and technology were to come into existence and he would be witness to them all.
As a kid there was no shortage of hero’s and marvelous events.
Jesse Owens won four gold medals during the 1936 Summer Olympics.
Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth, and Honus Wagner become the first inductees into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Superman made his debut in Action Comics. The Empire State Building rose into the sky, the Hindenburg burned to the ground and Gone with the Wind played at the local theatre.
From jet planes to frisbees, Tom saw them all.
Tom, had an amazing ability to recall names, dates and places.
Name a street, he knew how to get there! He was a veritable GPS before we even heard of Garmin or Google Maps.
His command of geography was only equaled by his encyclopedic knowledge of popular songs. Who sang what song in what band.
When I started a business of posting signs for real estate companies, Tom, came on board as a partner.
We turned that meager business into a very successful concern, albeit with some very creative management skills. Some of the jobs we did together were the most profitable and hilarious times in my life. Yes, Tom…we sure got creative!
I could, without a doubt go on here for a good long time recounting my adventures with Tom. My brother-in-law, my partner, my friend. I will instead end with the same thought I began with: Tom Cavanaugh, 94.
A man who lived to see 17 Presidents elected. A man who loved his family and his friends.
A man I will miss.
Rest in sweet peace my friend.
Billy & Cindy Nolan
