Peter A. Hewel Obituary

Peter Allen Hewel, owner of 845 Clean and a 27-year resident of the area, died peacefully at

home with his loving wife Lisa by his side. He was 59.


The son of the late Paul and Mary Louise Johnson Hewel, he was born July 16, 1964 in Peekskill.

Peter was a graduate of Storm King School in Cornwall-on-Hudson and attended the University

of Bridgeport as a photography major. He previously owned and operated his own photo studio and lab in

Millbrook, and was employed as a digital imaging technician at the Times Herald-Record.


He was a former trustee of the Trolley Museum of New York in Kingston. He was an active

supporter and volunteer with numerous animal welfare organizations including Will Spay Pets, Humane

Society of Middletown, SCATS, Walden Humane Society, Pets Alive and Dumped/Stray Animal Rescue

and TARA. He was also co-founder of the Catskill Astronomy Club.


Peter loved to cook and entertain family and friends. He was famous for his lasagna, stuffed

shells and antipasto. He was an avid New York Yankees fan, and loved traveling to Puerto Rico, Saratoga

Springs, Vermont and Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. As a child, he spent many summers in Old

Forge and other Adirondack locations, and enjoyed returning to that area as often as possible.


He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Lisa Scarano Hewel, at home. He is also survived by his

father-in-law, Louis Scarano Sr. of Newburgh; brother-in-law Louis Scarano Jr. and his wife Gina of

Helena, Alabama; brother-in-law John Scarano of Newburgh; sister-in-law Helene Molzahn and her

husband Dan of Monroe; brother-in-law Richard Scarano and his wife Rosemarie of Middletown, and

brother-in-law Nicholas Scarano and his wife Lori of Wallkill. He is survived by his many nieces and

nephews, all whom he adored: Michele Farrell, Dominic Scarano, Richard Scarano and his wife Kimberley,

all of Middletown; Christian Farrell of Middletown; Michael Scarano and his wife Katelyn of Beesemer,

Alabama; Andrea Molina and her husband Matthew of San Antonio, Texas; Emily Colson and her

husband Tim of Walden; Alexis Scarano and her fiancé Fernando Aguilar of Newburgh; Daniel and

Dylan Molzahn of Monroe; Eric Scarano and his wife Meghan of Westtown; and Nicholas and Anthony

Scarano of Wallkill. In addition, his great-nieces and nephews Jaden, Emory and Owen Farrell of

Middletown; Poppy and Piper Scarano of Beesemer, Alabama; Jackson, Chase and Clayton Colson of

Walden; Julianna Velasquez of Newburgh; and London Pagan of Westtown, as well as many aunts, uncles

and cousins, and cherished friend Melinda Applegate of Long Branch, NJ . Peter also leaves behind his beautiful spoiled

black cats Chloe and Zac.


He was predeceased by his parents, mother-in-law Bertha Mingolla Scarano

and brother-in-law William Ney.


Many thanks to Orange and Sullivan Hospice staff Cassidy, Mary, Suzanne, Amanda, Jamie,

Christine, Christy, Laura and Margaret, as well as Dr. Jason Taniguchi for their care and compassion.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family, as Peter wished.
