Alice Helen (Yurek) Stiles, age 95, of Port Jervis, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, died December 11, 2022 at Garnet Health Medical Center.
Alice was born on November 19, 1927 in Dover, DE to the late Margaret Eva (Foltz) and James Yurek, and was the 11th of 12 children. The family moved to Seaford, DE where she grew up.
She survived the Great Depression and World War II to marry her wartime Navy Machinist Mate pen pal turned sweetheart, Robert “Bob” Leroy Stiles on June 29, 1947. A homemaker married to an ACME butcher and Navy veteran, she would live in Essex, MD, Summitville and Huguenot, NY, Bella Vista, AR, and finally Port Jervis, NY.
Alice and Bob welcomed their daughter Deborah Lynn in 1952 and son Gregory Zane in 1966. Together they built a house, where her creative abilities and green thumb made the home and the flower gardens beautiful. A consummate seamstress, she dressed her children and grandchildren, even making Deborah’s wedding dress. A talented country cook, Alice held Sunday family dinners of chicken and dumplings or roast beef and potatoes with pistachio cake and often provided meals for others in need from her church community.
Alice and Bob loved Jesus, her family, her church friends, traveling, and visiting family all over the US. As retirees, they headed the church Sunday School programs, ran a campground, continued to garden, and helped build and clean their church.
She is reunited in heaven with her husband, Bob, her parents, all 11 siblings, and many other friends and family.
Alice (or Mother, Hon, Babe, Mommy, Aunty Puzz, Gramcracker) is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and N. William Snyder of Port Jervis, NY, and son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Tanya Stiles of Panama City, FL. She will be fondly remembered by grandchildren Stephanie, Stacia, and Stalena Snyder, and Robert, Morgan, and Noah Stiles and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family gatherings will be held privately in NY and at the family plot in Baltimore, MD.
