We loved stories of Josefina’s atelier in Havana. She was the dressmaker to many elegant ladies of Cuba in the years prior to 1959 when Castro took over. How difficult it was for her to be forced out of her thriving business after working so hard to build it up. What a brave couple she and Ramon were to have to start their lives over in New York. Josefina loved her work as a clothing designer and shared her expertise with up and coming young designers in New York’s fashion houses.Josefina also had such a fierce love of her children and family in Catalunya. We remember wonderful meals with family and friends in Sunnyside and weekends at their home in Mastens Lake. My husband Gregory had a special bond as he was also born in Cuba.

Doña Josefina! As i was growing up alongside your own children, i always appreciated your warm hospitality (not to mention your mastery of canasta on the sands of Jones Beach)! But I especially applaud your expertise as a seamstress and designer! You created the most beautiful wedding gown for Mari Nieves in 1975, who-in my opinion-was the luckiest and most beautiful bride in the world that day! You have a special place in my heart, Señora Urpi. Rest in peace.

When you think of a grandmother, you think of the blood mother of one of your parents; a person who will always have your back, give you advice, and spoil you rotten. Well, Abuelita has ALWAYS been a Grandmother to me in every way! She has always treated me like one of her grandchildren. Gently touching my face, kissing my cheeks, and telling me how beautiful her sweet Donna was to her….I will always cherish all our funny memories from the lake, Middletown, or in Queens! Talking about Bloomingdale’s or cute boys always ended in lots of laughs. Rest in peace, Abuelita. Love, Donna Brown
