William George McCann (Bill), 84, of Broadway, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on July 20, 2026.

Born on November 29, 1941, in Port Jervis, New York, Bill was the son of the late Thomas and Agnes Kohl McCann.

Bill proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Charles R. Ware during the Cuban Missile Crisis. His years of military service remained an important part of his life, and he treasured the lifelong friendships he maintained with his fellow shipmates through regular reunions.

 Following his military service, Bill dedicated his career to the United States Postal Service, where he faithfully served for many years before retiring as Postmaster of Timberville, Virginia. His strong work ethic, integrity, and commitment to serving his community earned him the respect of colleagues and friends alike.

A man of deep faith, Bill was a devoted member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Churchand a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He found great joy in serving others, coaching Little League for many years, participating in competitive musket shooting, and volunteering through his church with Friendship House, where he quietly lived out his faith by serving those in need.

Bill was a true master gardener who could seemingly grow anything. Whether tending flowers, vegetables, or trees, he found joy in helping things flourish. He was also a perfectionist in the very best sense of the word. His remarkable attention to detail wasreflected in every aspect of his life—from an impeccably organized garden shed and meticulously arranged closet to every project he undertook. Those who knew Bill knew that if he took on a task, it would be done with care, precision, and pride. He believed that anything worth doing was worth doing well.

He was known for the simple pleasures that brought him happiness: a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, a bowl of ice cream, time spent with his beloved dogs, and sharing stories that showcased his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. Proud of his Irish heritage, Bill carried himself with humility, kindness, and an appreciation for family traditions.

One of the greatest blessings of Bill's life was reconnecting later in life with his high school classmate, the former Nancy Fine. Through handwritten letters, their friendship blossomed into a lasting love, and they were married on December 7, 1985. Their marriage was a beautiful testament to faith, companionship, and the enduring power of second chances.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy; his two sons, Thomas W. McCann and his wife, Gina, of Port Jervis, New York, and Michael P. McCann and his wife, Kristina, of Warwick, New York; his daughter, Megan A. McCann, of Harrisonburg, Virginia; his stepson, Patrick J. Molloy and his wife, Anna, of Harrisonburg, Virginia; and many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brother, Robert T. McCann, and his sisters, Helen F. Kline and Mary Ann Gosch.

Bill will be remembered for his steadfast faith, his devotion to his family, his service to his country and community, and the quiet example he set every day through hard work, generosity, and love. His life was measured not only by what he accomplished, but by the kindness he showed, the values he lived, and the countless lives he touched. Like the gardens he so lovingly tended, Bill cultivated lives with patience, care, and generosity, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to grow in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated by Father Silvio Kaberia at 2:00 p.m. on Friday July 24, 2026, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Harrisonburg. Cremation followed, with burial at Linville Creek Cemetery in Broadway.
