William D. Hankins Obituary

William D. Hankins, a lifelong resident of the area, died on December 18, 2025 at Campbell Hall Nursing & Rehabilitation.  He was 78 years old.

The son of the late Margaret and George Hankins, he was born on March 9, 1947 in Port Jervis.

After graduating from high school, Bill proudly served in the United States Air Force, where he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged. His military service shaped much of his character, instilling in him a strong work ethic and integrity.

Upon returning home, Bill worked tirelessly to provide for his family, holding down two jobs for many years. He served as a cook at Homer’s Restaurant in Port Jervis, and worked alongside the Scully Family at the Port Jervis Diner and Scully’s Restaurant, where he became known for his dedication and hard work in the kitchen.

While Bill enjoyed a variety of roles, he is perhaps best remembered for his long and successful career as a salesman with Wells Inc., where he worked for over 30 years before retiring. His honesty, charm, and ability to connect with others made him a trusted figure in both his personal and professional life.

Bill was deeply involved in his faith and community. As an Elder and Deacon at the Deerpark Reformed Church, he dedicated much of his time to serving others. He was known by many as a man who would offer a helping hand without hesitation, especially when it came to his family, whom he loved dearly.

In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased in life by his son Michael Stevenson, his sisters Marie Hankins and Margaret Slaughter with her husband William, and brother in law Randy Anderson.

Beloved husband of Kathleen Cole Hankins.  Father of Denise Lechowcz (Ronnie), Michelle Feyler (David), Brian Stevenson (Teresa) and David Hankins (Titana).  Brother of George Hankins (Barbara), John Hankins (Dora) and James Hankins (Martha). Grandfather of seven and great grandfather of 2.  Bill was a fond uncle & great uncle to many nieces and nephews.

As per Bill’s wishes private cremation services took place with final committal taking place in the family plot at Laurel Grove Cemetery, Port Jervis.
