Obituary of James W. Shand

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

James W. Shand of Westtown died on March 30, 2025 at home.  He was 77 years old.

The son of the late Mary and James A. Shand, he was born on August 7, 1947 in the Bronx.

After graduating high school, Jim joined the Merchant Marines before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, where he served during the Vietnam War.  Jim and Ann Di Scala married in 1974 and celebrated the significant milestone of 50 years of marriage this past summer.  Shortly after they were married, Jim and Ann moved to the countryside after purchasing a home in Westtown, NY, where they went on to raise their family.  A hardworking family man, Jim devoted himself to providing opportunities for his children, ensuring they could pursue higher education and build lives even brighter than his own.

Jim found his greatest joy in the simple pleasures—spending time with his loved ones, especially his cherished grandchildren, and tending to his home and yard with care.  His legacy is one of sacrifice and love.

In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased in life by his brother-in-law George Van Lear and his maternal grandmother, Margaret Gerlis.  He fondly remembered his grandmother who loved him dearly.

Devoted husband of Ann Di Scala Shand of Westtown.  Devoted father of Renee Shand-Lubbers (Jeff) of Montclair, NJ, Peter Shand of Irmo, SC, and Joseph Shand (Jaimee) of Cortland, NY.  Cherished grandfather of Noah, Lucy, Dylan, Kamryn, Theo, and Oliver.  Dear brother of Mary Ellen Van Lear and Joan Van Bourgondien (Jim).  Fond uncle of Melissa and Gregory along with his nieces and nephews in his extended family.

In lieu of flowers the family requested donations be made in Jim's memory to ASPCA, aspca.org or to Vietnam Veterans of America VVA at vva.org

Please make use of the tribute wall by leaving a memory or condolence for the family.

Arrangements entrusted to the Knight - Auchmoody Funeral Home of Port Jervis, NY.
