Obituary of Gary S. Conklin

Gary S. Conklin a former longtime resident of Port Jervis, died peacefully on March 26, 2025 at Joe Raso Hospice.  

The son of the late Clarence and Margaret Conklin, he was born on July 14, 1947 in Port Jervis, NY.  

Gary proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force and was a disabled Vietnam veteran. After his military service, he dedicated many years as a Corrections Officer with the New York State Department of Corrections, retiring from Otisville Correctional Facility.  

A skilled craftsman, Gary was talented with his hands—whether woodworking, fixing things around the house, or tackling any project with precision. Known for his firm handshake and steadfast nature, he was a true "man’s man" who faced life’s challenges with strength and determination.  

Gary had a passion for travel and explored the world with his beloved wife Eileen before her untimely passing. His adventurous spirit, loyalty, and resilience left a lasting impression on his family.  He fought courageously to the end, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, love, and perseverance.  

In addition to his parents Gary was predeceased in life by his wife Eileen Conklin and brothers William and Alan Conklin.

Beloved father of Dawn Smith with her husband Homer and Gary Conklin with his wife Michelle.  Cherished grandfather of Julianna Clemente, Madison Schroder her husband Robert, Logan Conklin, Valerie Smith and Charlotte Smith.  Great grandfather of Ivy.  Dear brother of Clarence Conklin with his wife Mickey.  Gary was an uncle to many nieces and nephews who will be missed.

A visitation will take place on Sunday from 2 to 5:00PM at the Knight - Auchmoody Funeral Home.  The family will receive guests on Monday from 10:30 to 11:00AM.  A funeral service will take place 11:00AM at the funeral home with the Rev. Keith W. Raser officiating.  Immediately following services the burial will take place at Orange County Veterans Cemetery with US Air Force Honors.
