Donny was a gentle giant, both literally and figuratively. Others might know him in adulthood as Don, or maybe even Donald, but he’ll always be Donny to me.
We grew up together in the somewhat Mayberry-like-town of Stony Point. Our families were friends. Donny was in a grade above mine, and I went to school with his sister, Missy, going all the way back to kindergarten. He and I were always friendly throughout high school, but it was when I returned home after college that we got close.
After a couple of post-college jobs, I answered an ad for work, and when I walked into the office, I saw Donny there. He had a big smile on his face. It wasn’t long before we partnered at work, and ended up spending every day together for months on end. Donny made what could’ve been a very trying time not just tolerable, but lots of fun. I remember one time that we were driving to work down the Palisades Parkway, when all of a sudden most of the engine of Donny’s car fell out right onto the parkway. We had to pull over by gliding onto the grass meridian, where we eventually came to a stop. We then both laughed hysterically. We continued to laugh about that incident for many years afterward.
A short time after leaving that job, I moved to New York City to pursue my dream of being an artist. Donny and I lost touch for a while, as friends often do while life finds its own way. Donny got married to Carolee, and I got married to my wife, Susan, and sometimes years would go by without us speaking with each other.
One day, I was walking down 14th Street to the subway when I got a phone call from a number I didn’t know. The caller introduced himself in a voice I didn’t recognize, and asked me if I was Richard Humann, the famous artist? He said that he was interested in commissioning me for a large work, that they would ship it to Dubai once completed. He asked if I could send him my website information, and any images that I had on hand. In the middle of giving him my website address, I had a realization and I stopped cold. I said, “Donny, you son of a b…” and he laughed like hell! We both did. We stayed in touch after that, making sure to call each other a few times a year to check in with each other.
Donny called me a few months ago when he learned of his diagnosis. His voice was unwavering and strong. He said he was going to fight hard for his wife, children, and family that he loved so much. When it was time to end our call, he told me he loved me. I told him I loved him too—and I do.

Q: What will you never forget about Donald?
A: Meeting Donnie at the limousine company in 1988. A limousine ride and dinner in Little Italy. Him sitting on the desk and telling me to talk to hear my southern accent. Meeting the snakes. Trip to the Poconos. Years later meeting up with his family and ours in Hershey Park. The Italian restaurant and being neighbors in NC. Hiking in Pilot Mountain. Pool parties and sledding, riding 4 wheelers and so much more.

Q: What will you never forget about Donald?
A: I loved growing up on TenEyck St and all the memories we made from elementary school on. The bike rides, jumping garbage cans, collecting frogs, salamanders. The things we did that kids today would never understand, no computers, very little TV. I am so grateful to have shared part of a childhood with you. God Bless, RIP

Q: What will you never forget about Donald?
A: Don was my supervisor years ago. He helped me with finding work while I was studying. He was a truly remarkable boss who I try to emulate as a supervisor now. He was direct and to the point while being professional and courteous along with being hilarious most of the time. I’m grateful for the time I got to know him.

Q: What will you never forget about Donald?
A: One of the most down to earth guys I ever met, and you could tell he knew how to enjoy himself. He also loved his kids and grandchildren. Donny, that’s who I knew him as, was protectant of his family, you could tell. These are some of the obvious qualities I knew him for. I wanted him to know I was always thinking of him. And, he got raw deal at the end of you ask me. Too soon.
